     Tread Softly With Me

'Tread Softly With Me' (94cm x 191cm x 5.5cm), is a work with its own history. The stretcher supporting this canvas is made from recycled timber. The cycle of the timber was thus: In its 1st life, the Tree was felled and sawn into 10cm x 10cm x 366cm and 15cm x 15cm x 366cm lengths to be used; in its 2nd life, as a support rack to hold other timber in the timber warehouse. When the timber yard was sold, the support racks were dismantled and were donated for a church project in Leamington Spa which was to become its 3rd life, the timber lengths became the stretchers and wall battening for two 19foot high oil painted panels to be located in the Sanctuary of St Mary's Church, Leamington Spa, entitled ‘The Easter Story’. The surplus timber from the project was given to the artist by the church and thus, the timber entered its 4th life, as the stretcher of 'Tread Softly With Me'. The allusion to the rampant destruction of our forests and woodlands held within this picture makes it quite fitting that in order to make the support for this particular painting no new tree was destroyed. The recyclable journey of this particular timber is, at the moment, resting.
